Do you own a hand made painted kitchen, or an existing wooden kitchen that you would like to revamp and modernise? There’s endless cost effective options without the inconvenience of replacing! This example would also work well on an existing wooden kitchen, with some of the original wooden features left unpainted.
This recent hand painted kitchen in Littleover Derby, was originally hand made and installed around 8 years abo by Local bespoke furniture manufacturers Osborne of Ilkeston.
As with all Osborne kitchens, this one remained in excellent condition, however the client was ready for a makeover without going down the replacement route.
The brief for the refurb was for Osborne’s to fit a new island breakfast top in oak and exchange the existing cherry wood features for oak, this included the inset trim to the cornice, pilasters and decorative grilled insets to the pan draws and wall units doors.
As with all my hand painted kitchen projects, the protection of surrounding surfaces such as flooring and work surfaces is paramount. I’m not a messy or untidy worker but always ensure thorough masking up and protection is carried out prior to any prep work and painting. On this project, I masked out the expensive wood flooring and Corian worktops with 1400 grade heavy duty lining paper and an easy peel (7 day) masking tape.
Paint and Colours:
I only use paints that are specifically designed for hand painted kitchens and furniture; high adhesion primers that will stick to the most difficult surfaces and block out knots and tanning on natural timbers, together with a choice of semi matt and matt top coats which offer long term durability and an exceptionally tough finish for interior woodwork, kitchen cabinets, radiators and furniture.
These high quality paint systems can be mixed to any colour and on this project the client had chosen a split colour with the wall units painted in an equivalent colour to Farrow and Ball ‘House White’ and the base units in an equivalent colour to Farrow and Ball ‘Mizzle’.
Mizzle seemed to be a popular colour for hand painted furniture in 2014, I had recently completed another Osborne kitchen in Derbyshire with this colour and some built in display dressers.
Colour options are endless nowadays and with complimentary new knobs or handles, your existing kitchen can look like new once again and it doesn’t have to cost the earth.
We are a family run business with over 3 decades of experience in providing high quality paint finishes and workmanship on hand painted kitchens, furniture and interiors.
