Refurbishing a second hand designer kitchen or existing units is a much cheaper option than replacement, that’s what my client in West Bridgford, Nottingham did with this second hand Mark Wilkinson designer kitchen which they bought off the internet.
The kitchen was purchased complete with granite worktops and although some alterations were required, it was well worth the effort and end result! What the client saved as opposed to buying new, allowed them to upgrade to some top notch electrical appliances!
Whilst searching around the internet they came across me, Traditional Painter for Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire and together with a local joiner, granite installer, sparky and a decorator; we were all able to do our jobs efficiently to refurb and give a new lease of life to this once again beautiful designer kitchen. The joiner completed his alterations including a central island unit made from existing doors and draws and made up some new doors to fit over the integrated appliances, the granite was re-cut to fit, with the addition of an up-stand made from leftover material, the electrician sorted the lighting and new sockets, the decorator sorted the ceiling and walls etc…
Now its my turn!
I always spend the first few days prepping on any hand painted kitchen projects: Degreasing all the units, doors and draws, removing fittings and handles before everything has a thorough and meticulous sanding. I don’t have to worry about dust either as I use a Mirka dust free sanding system and what I cant do get too with my sanding machines, I wet flat or dry flat and hoover. Finally everywhere is wiped over with meths to remove any trace of grease and tack ragged off to remove fine particles. Its only then I start masking up work surfaces, flooring and anywhere not being painted.
Once everything is flatted back smooth, I apply a special shellac based primer to seal any resinous wood, this also stops any tanning coming through when the top coats are applied.
I had to sand these doors back to the extreme due to the previous very poor paint finish! Normally a thorough sand with 240g Mirka Abranet abrasives is sufficient.
