A painted kitchen in Tickhill

Grade II-listed Rowland Bridge House in the town of Tickhill near Doncaster, South Yorkshire. This Six-bedroom period home, which dates back to the 17th century, has cinema room, gardens and orangery. With a Dam at the bottom of the garden, it truly is an incredible place to live.

South Yorkshire kitchen painting

The luxury property was once the childhood home of TV presenter Jeremy Clarkson. This is where Clarkson’s mother Shirley ran a small manufacturing business called Gabrielle Designs with his father Edward at the time and created the first Paddington Bear soft toy while living in the house in order to afford school fees for son Jeremy. The luxury property is located near the prestigious Hill House and Repton schools which he attended as a child.

The hit children’s toy was modified by the Yorkshire-based designers to include wellington boots as the bear would not stand up on its own. The revision became so popular that it was adopted in the design of the character, who was created by Michael Bond in 1958, across other toy versions.

This meant Clarkson, who was 12 at the time, became the first child in the UK to own a Paddington Bear toy as a result, alongside sister Joanna.

Hand painting the kitchen at Rowland Bridge House

We were invited to hand paint this kitchen, utility and other cabinetry as part of an extensive house renovation project. The property has since been sold but we still have our story to tell…

The kitchen was a well built and spacious area in need of a face lift and looking a little dated. On close inspection it was looking tired and showing signs of wear and tear. The clients wanted to make a few modifications and had some additional storage built at one end, with the addition of some seating under a window. A mix of oak units with wicker basket drawers around the island, a wooden oak shelf across the mantle above the Aga and oak wooden knobs on the doors and drawers. It all seemed a little bit drab and lifeless, although the property is full of character.

Following several conversations with the client regarding colour, it was decided to go with a soft cool grey on the previously painted kitchen unit doors, drawers and also paint the oak island in a mid grey tone. Inside the glass cabinets and open display area would be painted in a deep grey to coincide with the greys in the karndean vinyl floor tiles which were staying. The chunky oak shelving over the Aga would be painted in a mid grey tone. The new storage units were painted to match the island and oak shelf. It wasn’t a dramatic change but enough to introduce some colour and modernise it.

The old wooden door knobs would be swapped for pewter pull knobs and cabin style cup handles to the drawers. The existing splash back tiles were also removed and replaced with some hand made tiles, fixed in a half bond style with the in scripted motive of Roland Bridge House behind the Aga.

With concealed lighting above the cornice and decking style lighting in the kickboards, this also lifted the dark flooring and set a relaxing ambiance for the darker evenings. The kitchen now looked much more modern and spacious.
