Painting Existing Kitchens

Does your existing kitchen sound something like this? You have a wooden kitchen which is constructed of oak or pine (or other similar wood species) It was fitted some 15 to 20 years ago and at the time cost a small fortune! There isn’t anything wrong with it, you still like the layout and wouldn’t change that but it is now looking tired and worn.

It may have been previously painted from new or it has a natural wood finish with a lacquer to protect it, but either way its now showing signs of wear and tear over the years. The original wood actually looks like its turned orange.

Sound like your kitchen?

Your kitchen comprises something like 20 doors, 9 draws with integrated fridge freezer door, plus two glass display cabinets… you also have a free standing dresser but never did really like it, as it didn’t quite go with the kitchen in the first place. The original work tops are still in pretty good condition, but the old cream ceramic sink has to go! The wooden door knobs have worn and tarnished in places, they could also do with going and be replaced with something more modern, that will compliment the hand painted finish.

This description is typical of a lot of the enquiries I receive and how a potential client gives an explanation of their existing kitchen. They will also explain how they would like to replace the splashback tiles and also the flooring. This kind of work is better being done prior to the kitchen painting.

Options and Choices

There are many options and choices when having your existing kitchen transformed. You may consider changing your work surfaces or if the worktops are wood, they can be sanded and re-finished with a lacquer, oil or wax finish. If sanding is required, all of the sanding equipment used, is dust free and fitted to an extractor unit, so there is virtually no mess or dust! You can change your tiled splashbacks for something more modern. Coloured glass and antique glass is also very popular. Floor coverings are often changed but obviously not so straight forward if you already have a tiled floor.

We often get asked to sand and refinish table tops or wooden tops on dining room dressers. These along with wooden chairs can be finished to match in with or compliment the new kitchen colour. We can also re decorate your kitchen and utility walls, whilst the kitchen is being refurbished.

Paint and Colours

Over the past 15 years, paints have changed dramatically and water-borne paints have become increasingly more durable and hard wearing without the smell and odours associated with many of the previous solvent based paints. Having painted literally hundreds of kitchens using these paints, one of the key advantages of water-borne paint, is that it dries very quickly! Great if there are pets in the house and even better if there are young children around. The paint products  used to hand paint kitchens can be matched to the equivalent colours in most popular colour charts. So that colour choice is almost endless. I would suggest narrowing your choice down to 2 or 3 colours, buy some match pots and do a brush out on some card. This can then be offered around the kitchen in different light sources to get a feel for the colours before making the final decision.

Finishing Touches

To add the finishing touches and compliment your new hand painted kitchen, I can offer a huge range of cabinet handles and knobs from my recommended ironmongery supplier there are some great discount on cabinet hardware if you order from my supplier. You can of course source new hardware yourself or keep the original ones if you wish. Existing holes in doors and drawers can be filled using a high strength two part filler and then templated and re-drilled to fit your new hardware. This also gives you endless options for new handles and knobs. Once the refitting of all of the doors and drawers in freshly painted kitchen is done, I then carry out final checks to ensure they are all aligned and closing properly. If needed, new hinges and soft closures can also be fitted for a smooth operation.

Refurbishing your existing kitchen by having it hand painted is such a cost effective, efficient and stress free way as opposed to the disruption involved with replacement.
