Kitchen Cabinet Painter in Nottingham – Hand Painting by Russ Pike Interiors
If your kitchen is looking a little tired but the cabinets are still in good condition, a professionally hand painted finish can make a remarkable difference. A change of colour, careful preparation and attention to the finer details can give you a kitchen you enjoy spending time in again.
I’m Russ Pike, a specialist kitchen cabinet painter based in Nottingham. Through Russ Pike Interiors, I hand paint kitchens and painted bespoke cabinetry across Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and throughout the East Midlands.
With over 40 years of experience as a specialist kitchen painter, I take a traditional, hands-on approach to my work. For me, a beautiful kitchen finish comes from sound preparation, suitable materials and the patience to get each stage right.
A Personal Approach to Painting Your Kitchen
Every kitchen is different, and so are the people who use it. You may want to brighten a dark wooden kitchen, introduce a favourite colour or refresh an existing painted finish that has seen better days.
Whatever you have in mind, I take the time to understand what you would like to achieve and assess the cabinetry before recommending an approach.
Whether yours is a compact gallery kitchen, shaker style or a large bespoke new installation, you can expect the same care, attention to detail and personal service throughout.
Why I Choose to Hand Paint Kitchen Cabinets
I have always enjoyed the craftsmanship involved in producing a quality hand painted finish. It is particularly well suited to cabinetry, where shaped doors, mouldings, cornices and decorative details all need individual attention.
Working by hand allows me to give those features the care they deserve, creating a finish that complements the furniture and the character of your home.
There are practical benefits too. A hand painted surface can often be repaired locally if it suffers a knock or chip, and it can be prepared and repainted when you eventually feel ready for another colour change.
It is a finish you can live with, maintain and enjoy for years to come.
Making the Most of Your Existing Cabinetry
A kitchen does not necessarily need replacing simply because its colour or finish feels dated. If the cabinets are sound and the layout still works for you, repainting gives you the opportunity to make more of what you already have.
I work on existing painted kitchens, solid wood cabinetry and suitable MDF surfaces, as well as fitted bedroom furniture.
If you have an oak kitchen you are considering painting, the grain, existing coating and condition of the timber will all help determine the preparation and final appearance.
Other surfaces, including laminate and vinyl-wrapped doors, need to be assessed individually. Their suitability depends on the condition of the surface and, in the case of wrapped doors, how securely the covering is attached.
The first step is always to establish what can be achieved with your particular kitchen.
Choosing a Colour Scheme That Feels Right for Your Home
Colour can completely change the atmosphere of a kitchen.
Soft neutrals can create a calm, welcoming space, while deeper shades can bring warmth and definition to the cabinetry. A contrasting island offers another way to introduce colour without using it throughout the room.
I can help you consider your choices alongside the worktops, flooring, natural light and surrounding décor. These elements all influence how a paint colour looks once it is in place.

The aim is to create a scheme that suits both the room and your own taste, whether you prefer a traditional country kitchen or a more contemporary appearance.
How I Prepare and Hand Paint a Kitchen
The finished paintwork is the part you see, but much of the work happens before the finishing coats are applied.
Protecting Your Home
I begin by carefully protecting the worktops, flooring, appliances and surrounding areas where needed. Keeping the work area organised is an important part of working in someone’s home.
Doors, drawer fronts and hardware are removed as required, with components labelled so they can be returned to their correct positions.
Thorough Cleaning and Preparation
Kitchen cabinetry collects grease and everyday residues, even when it looks clean. Thorough degreasing is essential before sanding and painting.
I then prepare the surfaces, address minor damage and fill suitable gaps where necessary. Door profiles, frames, end panels, cornices and decorative features all receive attention.
Priming and Applying the Finish
The primer is selected to suit the surface and existing coating. Once the cabinetry is ready, I apply the finishing coats of specialist furniture paint, allowing the appropriate drying time and sanding between coats where required.
A carefully hand painted kitchen takes time. Each stage contributes to the appearance and durability of the finished work, so it is important to allow the process the attention it needs.
A Fresh Kitchen Without a Complete Refit
For a suitable kitchen, repainting can offer a substantial saving compared with replacing the cabinetry. It also avoids much of the upheaval associated with removing and installing an entire kitchen.
There will still be some disruption while the work takes place, but I plan the project carefully and explain what to expect before starting.
Every quotation is prepared individually. The size of the kitchen, its condition, the amount of preparation and the complexity of the cabinetry all affect the work involved.
This means you receive a proposal based on your kitchen and the finish you would like to achieve.
