Repainting kitchen cabinets

Repainting kitchen cabinets is an excellent way to refresh the look of your kitchen without the expense and hassle of a full remodel or refit. Hand painting existing kitchen cabinet doors offers several benefits, making it a popular choice for homeowners looking to refresh their kitchens without a complete overhaul.

Painting existing kitchen cabinets

This hand painted kitchen was in the village of Hawksworth on the outskirts of Nottingham and It had been painted previously but very badly, (see pics below).

The Preparation!

I was recommended to the client by their decorator, whom I had worked with previously on another kitchen repaint in the nearby village of Car Colston. The existing paint work on this project was shocking! There would be some serious preparation to do, prior to the painting.

Its jobs like this where my dust free sanding equipment comes in to very good use, as I begin to prepare all the surfaces, the doors, the frames, end panels, cornice and kickboards.

How to prepare a kitchen for painting

I will often spend a couple of days sanding and preparing a kitchen, before I even think about getting any paint out. I actually spent the best part of a week preparing this one, the paint looked like it had been put on with a trowel rather than a brush. The hinges and handles were also covered in paint.

I remove all the doors and drawers, so I can sand and prepare them properly and it also gives me easy access to the frames. All the cabinet hardware is removed, including the hinges. Once I am happy with the prep work, I mask up and protect all surrounding surfaces, ready to starting priming.

The Painting Process

I use a high adhesion primer for jobs like this one, although I may use different types of primer for different surfaces. Once everything is primed, I will leave overnight before I start applying the topcoats. Painting with water-borne acrylic topcoats offers several sustainability benefits compared to solvent-based alternatives, making it a more eco-friendly choice.

Cost-Effective: Hand painting is significantly cheaper than replacing the kitchen or the cabinet doors. It allows you to achieve a transformed look without the expense of a new kitchen and the disruption and inconvenience from a new installation.

Customisable Aesthetic: Painting gives you complete control over colour choices and finishes, enabling a tailored look that complements your kitchen’s style. From sleek modern tones to rustic finishes, you can achieve almost any design vision you can think of.

Eco-Friendly: Instead of discarding old cabinets and contributing to landfill waste, hand painting allows you to reuse existing materials, reducing your environmental footprint.

Quick and Convenient: Compared to a full kitchen remodel, hand painting can be completed more quickly with minimal disruption to your daily life. It also avoids the need for demolition or extensive clean-up during the work.

Enhanced Durability: With the right prep work and high-quality paints, the painted surface can be durable and resistant to chipping, scratches, and stains. This extends the life of your kitchen cabinets.

Opportunity for a Professional or DIY Approach: Whether you hire a professional for a flawless finish or take it on as a DIY project, painting allows for flexibility in cost and effort depending on your skills and budget.

Transformative Results: Even outdated or worn cabinets can look brand new after being painted. This makes it an excellent way to modernize or freshen up a kitchen without a full renovation.

Increased Home Value: A fresh and updated kitchen often increases the appeal of your home to potential buyers. Painted cabinets can contribute to an attractive, updated aesthetic at a fraction of the cost of replacements.

Versatile Application: Paint can be applied to a variety of cabinet materials, including wood, MDF, and laminate (with proper preparation), making it a versatile option for most kitchens.

Easy Maintenance and Updates: Painted surfaces are easy to clean and maintain. If you want to change your kitchen’s look in the future, it’s simpler to repaint than to replace cabinets again.

Pro Tips for Optimal Results:

  • Thorough and meticulous surface preparation is key (cleaning, degreasing, sanding, priming).
  • Use high-quality paints designed for cabinetry to ensure a smooth and durable finish.
  • Using high-quality paint brushes and equipment.

This approach is practical and creative, providing a high-impact update without breaking the bank.
