Another hand painted kitchen direct from Handmade Kitchens of Christchurch. Once they are painted, they look and feel like beautiful luxury kitchens at affordable prices! If you are looking for a new kitchen on a budget friendly price, then it is worth having a look at this company. I have hand painted several of their kitchens over the last few years and they do turn out pretty good, I must say! This is one I did in South Anston near Rotherham. These kitchens come un-primed in bare wood, I will explain why…
Most other kitchen manufacturers, either supply there kitchens pre-primed in a standard white primer, others will prime them in colours to suit the chosen colour choice. For instance if you had decided to have your island painted in a deep blue, such as this one, then it would be primed dark grey in the factory. Others will supply them in a pre-finished colour, sprayed in the factory and they are then touched up on site. However, if you purchase a spray finished kitchen it it ends up with any minor damage such as chips or knocks, then its very difficult, in most cases near on impossible to repair. Unless its re sprayed. With a hand painted kitchen, it can easily be rectified if it gets accidentally damaged during transit, installation or after fitting.
The hand painted process
When painting a kitchen, the cabinet doors and drawers are always removed once the kitchen has been fitted. We also remove the hardware; handles, pull knobs, hinges and catch plates. I have seen numerous kitchen that have been painted previously and the painter hasn’t bothered to do this and just painted around everything. Its very poor, bad practice and just lazy. Not professional at all! Also by removing the doors, gives much better access for painting the frames and masking up the carcasses which are often oak veneer which is usually oiled or stained.
I’ve had previous clients of new kitchens say to me “it wont need degreasing before you paint it, as its new!“ Hmm… absolutley yes you do! The doors would have been handled numerous times by the fitter and whoever else. They will have surface contamination on them and in time this can break down the paint film and cause failure. Its always safest to carry out the correct prep and a wipe over with white spirit or methylated spirit will generally do the trick on bare un-primed timber.
On a bare un-primed kitchen such as this, I apply to primers. The first one is what I call a lock down primer, in that it will seal the substrates i.e. the tulipwood surrounds and MDF door panels. This then gives a good base to carry out any filling required and then once sanded it forms a good base to apply the second primer/undercoat, which will apply much more easily over the first primer.
I will then give the second primer a light sand, hoover and tack cloth off any dust particles and apply the first top coat, leave to dry overnight and apply the second top coat, using a water-borne acrylic enamel. All the doors and drawers will be placed on purposed designed drying racks whilst being painted. Once all surfaces are fully dry, I then proceed to refit the hardware and fit everything back together.
