Whether I am finishing a newly installed bespoke kitchen or transforming an existing one, my approach is the same: careful preparation, quality materials, traditional hand-painting skills and close attention to the details that make the finished result feel right.
Traditional Craftsmanship, Finished by Hand
In a world where speed and mass production have become the norm, I still believe there is something very special about work that has been finished carefully by hand.
Hand painting kitchen cabinetry is a skilled process.
Every door, drawer, frame, panel and moulding needs to be approached individually. The surface has to be properly prepared, the correct products selected and each coat applied with care.
It is not simply a matter of putting paint onto a kitchen.
The aim is to understand the cabinetry beneath it and produce a finish that complements the quality of the joinery rather than hiding it.
On a bespoke kitchen, details such as in-frame construction, mouldings, cornices, pilasters and glazed cabinets are often part of what makes the kitchen special in the first place.
A good hand-painted finish should enhance those details.
Transforming an Existing Bespoke Kitchen
Many of the kitchens I am asked to paint are beautifully made and structurally sound.
They may have been installed 15, 20 or even 25 years ago and still function perfectly well.
The layout works.
The cabinetry is good quality.
The homeowner simply no longer likes the colour or finish.
Natural oak may have become orange with age. An older painted finish may be looking tired. Handles may feel dated, or the colour may no longer suit the rest of the home.
This is where professional kitchen painting and refurbishment can make such an enormous difference.
Instead of removing a perfectly good kitchen, we can retain the quality cabinetry and completely change its appearance.
For many homeowners, the finished result feels like having a new kitchen without the cost, waste and disruption involved in replacing everything.
Preparation Makes the Difference
If there is one thing more than four decades in the trade has taught me, it is this:
The quality of the finished paintwork begins with the preparation.
The final coats may be the part everyone notices, but much of the important work happens beforehand.
Depending on the cabinetry, preparation can include:
- thorough cleaning and degreasing
- careful sanding
- filling and minor repairs
- addressing damaged edges and joints
- dealing with previous coatings
- applying the correct primer
- fine sanding between coats.
The exact process varies from kitchen to kitchen because different surfaces require different treatment.
A painted oak kitchen may need a different approach from factory-finished MDF or previously painted bespoke cabinetry.
I also believe that respecting the client’s home is part of the job.
Worktops and surrounding surfaces are protected, sanding is carried out using dust-controlled equipment where appropriate, and I always aim to keep the working area organised and disruption to a minimum.
A Finish Designed for Everyday Life
A bespoke kitchen needs to look beautiful, but it also has to work hard.
Kitchen cabinetry is touched constantly.
Doors are opened, drawers are used, surfaces are cleaned and family life inevitably brings the occasional knock or mark.
That is why I use specialist coatings selected for their combination of appearance, durability and suitability for kitchen furniture.
My aim is always to produce a finish that is:
smooth, refined, durable and appropriate for the quality of the cabinetry beneath it.
The finished kitchen should not only look impressive when the final coat dries.
It should continue to look good as part of everyday life.

More Than 40 Years in the Trade
I have spent more than four decades developing my skills as a professional kitchen painter, specialist decorator and fine surace finisher.
During that time I have worked with an enormous variety of materials, coatings, properties and styles.
I am a fully qualified, time-served City & Guilds Advanced Craftsman, and my wider experience includes furniture restoration, French polishing, decorative finishes and specialist work within period properties.
That background is particularly useful when working with quality kitchens.
Sometimes a project requires far more than simply knowing how to apply paint.
There may be timber movement, damaged mouldings, unusual previous coatings, difficult hinges or repairs that need resolving before the decorative work can begin.
Experience helps you recognise those problems before they become problems.
Choosing the Right Colour
Colour is one of the most enjoyable parts of transforming a bespoke kitchen.
The right shade can completely change the character of the room.
Warm creams and stones can soften traditional cabinetry.
Muted greens and blues can bring a relaxed, contemporary feel.
Deeper colours can give islands, dressers and feature cabinetry far more presence.
But colour should never be chosen in isolation.
I always encourage clients to consider:
natural light
worktops
flooring
splashbacks
wall colours
cabinet hardware
the age and character of the property.
