Re-painting a country cottage kitchen in West Hallam, Derbyshire is a great example of how an existing kitchen can be completely transformed into something that feels personal, timeless and unique to its owners.
The client inherited the kitchen when they purchased the property, and it definitely wasn’t their cup of tea!
The cabinetry had previously been very badly painted in a combination of dark blue and white. The existing paintwork was tired and uneven, and the kitchen was in need of some serious preparation and a little bit of TLC.
Rather than replacing the kitchen, the decision was made to give the existing cabinetry a new lease of life through professional hand painting.
From Tired to Timeless

The first stage was meticulous preparation to deal with the existing paintwork and create the right surface for the new finish. Once prepared, the cabinetry was carefully primed before the finishing coats were expertly applied by hand.
It’s a process that takes time and patience, but the preparation is just as important as the painting itself. Getting those foundations right allows us to achieve the quality finish that a hand-painted kitchen deserves.
Choosing the Perfect Colour and Finishing Touches
For this project, the clients chose Parma Gray from the Farrow & Ball colour palette, a soft and timeless shade that worked beautifully with the character of the cottage kitchen.
The colour was specially matched and mixed into our specified specialist kitchen paint system, ensuring the cabinetry received a finish that was not only beautiful but also durable and suitable for everyday use.
As standard practice, all areas received one primer coat followed by two top coats. Depending on the colour being used, some shades may require additional coats to achieve maximum coverage and the best possible finish. We always take this into consideration as part of the painting process.
The clients also decided to retain their existing door handles and knobs, which we thought was a great choice. They complemented the new Parma Gray finish beautifully and helped retain some of the original character of the kitchen.

Mission Accomplished!
All of the doors and drawer fronts were returned fully painted and ready to be refitted. We carefully reinstalled all of the original hardware, replaced a few broken hinges, re-aligned the doors and checked that all of the drawer runners were working smoothly and correctly.
For this particular project, we suggested painting the kickboards black. This created a lovely visual break between the patterned tiled floor and the cabinetry, while also giving the impression that the cabinets were slightly raised from the floor. The darker kickboards helped to add depth and made the cabinetry appear subtly deeper and more substantial.
The finished result is a bright, clean and completely unique hand-painted kitchen, with every detail carefully considered. The cabinetry now has a beautifully smooth, durable finish, and most importantly, we have a very happy client!
